Unlike neighboring Cave Creek, Carefree dates back only a few decades. Founded in the 1950's, the town is one of the earliest planned communities in Arizona. We also boast one of the largest sundials in the Western Hemisphere. Carefree has gained a reputation for its beauty -- the unique rock outcroppings and boulders visible for miles -- its nationally-known residents and visitors and our shopping and recreational amenities. The art galleries, cultural events, unique shops and restaurants attest to our fine reputation.
In Carefree, natural habitat has been integrated into a planned residential community. Open space has been conserved, lot sizes are large but feature "desert friendly" landscaping. Custom homes blend into the rocks and surrounding mountain.

Cave Creek has a unique and colorful history, having been settled in the 1870s but not becoming incorporated as a municipality until 1986. Much of that history is still reflected in the theme of our special events and unique retail shops that dot the streets.
Cave Creek's fiercely independent spirit has been nurtured for more than 100 years as miners, ranchers and others looking to get away from it all settled in relative seclusion near Black Mountain. Although increased urban growth throughout the Valley has changed Cave Creek a bit, our residents are still down-to-earth folks who are civic-minded and active in the community.
Cave Creek's western tradition is evident in its southwestern architecture and rambling ranch homes. It is here that you will find small horse ranches.
